Van Epps is president of Sandri Cos., an 80-year-old fuel oil company that is on a multimillion-dollar mission to convert heating customers to a common and cheap renewable resource: wood pellets.
For homeowners, Sandri is using the stimulus funds to develop a pilot project that will offer 250 energy audits, weatherize 75 homes, and install 25 pellet boiler systems — plus $5,000 in rebates toward the purchase of ultra-low-emission pellet boilers.

Many homeowners are searching for more efficient ways to heat their homes. Often this requires a retrofit or extensive renovation to include new heating appliances and the latest technology. You may be working in awkward or smaller spaces with little room to vent or existing layouts that limit your choices. For an environmentally friendly solution that’s also highly efficient and adaptable to almost any home, consider a pellet stove.
The fuel used in pellet stoves is made up of materials that would otherwise be considered waste. By burning them to create home heat, you are averting them from the landfill. Pellets come in bulk bags, often 40 lb. in weight, and are made up of sawdust, wood chips and shavings, among other biomass wastes (like nut shells).
In the process of creating these pellets, compression squeezes out most of the moisture. This leaves you with a dry fuel that will burn much hotter than standard cord wood. A hot fire burns more completely and produces less emission, resulting in improved efficiency for you.
