Pellets over petroleum

pellet_stoves_new_hampshire

Interesting wood pellet article from the Boston Globe:

For someone who traffics in petroleum, Timothy Van Epps is doing everything he can to put his company out of that business.

Van Epps is president of Sandri Cos., an 80-year-old fuel oil company that is on a multimillion-dollar mission to convert heating customers to a common and cheap renewable resource: wood pellets.

For homeowners, Sandri is using the stimulus funds to develop a pilot project that will offer 250 energy audits, weatherize 75 homes, and install 25 pellet boiler systems — plus $5,000 in rebates toward the purchase of ultra-low-emission pellet boilers.

Home systems can run from $6,500 to $10,000 or more. Read more…

Essential Fireplace Maintenance

 fireplace_maintenance

Enjoying beautiful fires in a safe and efficient manner involves important fireplace maintenance steps. The most vital action is to have your fireplace checked annually by a certified professional.

Whether you burn wood or gas in a stove or fireplace, you need to have it checked once a year. Cleaning the various parts of the fireplace can be left up to you.

Ashes can be removed once they have cooled. The inside of a cool firebox should be vacuumed out well. If you have a gas log set, wipe it clean or scrub with a soft bristle brush.

Fireplace glass can be shined up using a specially formulated cleaner. Bricks and stone hearths can be washed using either a brick cleaner or lemon oil (for slate).

Brighten brass fittings with Worcestershire sauce and a soft brush (like an old toothbrush).

With these steps your fireplace will be fit and ready to deliver comfort and warmth all season long.

How Fireplace Insert Efficiency Will Improve Your Home

 fireplace_inserts_new_hampshire

The elegant look of your traditional fireplace is hard to rival. Many homeowners are reluctant to remove theirs, but the inconvenience and inefficiencies of using an open, wood burning fireplace can’t be ignored. You may find yourself considering an upgrade and fireplace inserts are an excellent choice. Not only can you enjoy the finish and style of your existing hearth, but fireplace insert efficiency and simple operation will be a welcome change. Fireplace inserts will also virtually eliminate wood burning smoke emissions and significantly increase the air quality in the neighborhood.

Due to its design and function, burning in your old fireplace actually resulted in a net loss of energy. The fire would draw air into the firebox for combustion and then expel it through the chimney, removing the warmth you were aiming to create. It would present a beautiful picture with dancing flames and a comfortable atmosphere, but the entire process was highly inefficient.

Wood burning fireplace inserts are a different story. Due to their airtight design, they take very little warm air from the room. When they extend out from the existing fireplace they also produce radiant heat to create even more warmth. More heat is created and retained inside your home and you can still bask in the beauty of a wood burning fire. Some models also come with blowers built in to create a convection effect, circulating the heated air throughout the area.

Also because of the airtight design fireplace inserts burn better, allowing you to use less fuel for a similar heat output. Every time you refill the fireplace you will save time and money.

The latest designs of fireplace inserts are well below the EPA emissions standards, improving the air quality and resulting in a more complete, cleaner burn. Catalytic design results in less creosote and other build up in the chimney, although it doesn’t remove the need for regular chimney cleaning. It’s a good idea to have your existing chimney repaired and lined with a full length flue insert. This will allow for easier cleaning and a safer operating environment. While you are investing in a new fireplace insert, have the chimney inspected and upgraded as well.

Gas fireplace inserts will give off less heat than their wood burning counterparts, but are extremely convenient to operate and maintain. With the flick of a switch you can create that cozy atmosphere you crave, no handling the fuel or cleaning up. With the latest gas log sets the yellow flames and charred logs of wood burning fires can be closely duplicated. Consider gas fireplace insert efficiency and convenience when you looking to upgrade your existing hearth.

Whether you choose a wood burning or gas model, fireplace inserts are a cost saving, heat producing and environmentally friendly upgrade to your home. Fireplace insert efficiency can improve your home and your wallet while taking nothing away from the hearth you love.

Consider a Pellet Stove for Convenience and Comfort

modern_pellet_stoves

Many homeowners are searching for more efficient ways to heat their homes. Often this requires a retrofit or extensive renovation to include new heating appliances and the latest technology. You may be working in awkward or smaller spaces with little room to vent or existing layouts that limit your choices. For an environmentally friendly solution that’s also highly efficient and adaptable to almost any home, consider a pellet stove.

The fuel used in pellet stoves is made up of materials that would otherwise be considered waste. By burning them to create home heat, you are averting them from the landfill. Pellets come in bulk bags, often 40 lb. in weight, and are made up of sawdust, wood chips and shavings, among other biomass wastes (like nut shells).

In the process of creating these pellets, compression squeezes out most of the moisture. This leaves you with a dry fuel that will burn much hotter than standard cord wood. A hot fire burns more completely and produces less emission, resulting in improved efficiency for you. As a comparison, new wood stoves designed to EPA standards give off 5 grams of particulate each hour and pellet stoves will emit less than 1 gram.

Pellet stoves are also extremely convenient. Once you locate a reliable source of pellets, they are readily available for use. Store them in a shed or in the basement in their clean, easy to transport bags. Quality pellet stoves will have a large hopper that is designed to hold at least a full 40 lb. bag of pellets, eliminating the need for partial, open bags. Those models will also have an adjustable feed rate to account for your particular set up and the type of pellets being used. Warning lights will let you know when the pellet supply is running low.

traditional_pellet_stoves

Venting is often easier for a pellet stove as well, making them suitable for more rooms in more homes. Instead of a chimney or stove pipe, they can usually be vented horizontally through a small hole in the wall (a pipe running vertically along the outside wall can also be added to the system). Many well designed pellet stoves are certified for installation in bedrooms and mobile homes.

Starting a pellet fire is simple with the auger and ignition system built into the unit. The whole operation is straightforward and covered well in the owner’s manual. The heat output is impressive, uses a sustainable fuel source and will keep your home cozy and comfortable with low emissions.

For a wise, reliable choice of alternate heating, consider a pellet stove today.

Choose Gas Stoves for Convenience and Ambiance

 vermont_castings_stoves_new_hampshire

You’ve had a hard day at work and would do anything to sit back and relax in the comfort and warmth of your living room. Unfortunately, to feel that warmth and atmosphere you will need to work at building a fire in your wood stove. Not so with gas stoves. With the simple flick of a switch, you can lay back, put your feet up and relax in a comfortable atmosphere. It’s difficult to beat gas stoves for convenience and instant ambiance.

Gas stoves are also highly efficient and reliable. Gas stoves are also easy to install. They will provide you with plenty of heat while producing little emission. Gas heating units are extremely safe when installed and maintained properly. If the power has been knocked out in stormy weather, you can always count on your gas stove to deliver heat and some light for safety and comfort.

jotul_stoves_new_hampshire

Another convenient feature of gas stoves is their simple venting procedure. Much like gas fireplaces, direct vented gas stoves use a small, noninvasive system to vent the emissions away from your living space. One stovepipe directed towards a wall or ceiling is all it takes, no messy chimneys to take up space and much shorter clearances required.

There are also vent-free gas stoves available with zero clearance requirements, making them suitable for installation almost anywhere. The important thing is to check with your local building codes, as some states may not allow this technology.

Gas stoves deliver all of the visual impact of wood burning stoves, from the shape to the colors and the dancing flames. You’ll enjoy the old world charm of many models, with arched designs on the glass doors and clawed feet for character. These stoves will fit seamlessly into classic décor.

The log sets are also convenient and beautiful, capturing the look of a wood fire almost completely. Look for ceramic log sets that echo the charred appearance and yellow flames of a wood fire. Your gas stove will probably look even better than wood, as you’ll know how easy it is to get the stove going and to shut it down. No ash to clean up, no chopping and hauling to do and no fuel to source out. Natural gas is also an economical source of fuel and can be enjoyed for short time spans or long.

Have your gas stove installed and inspected annually by a certified professional to ensure it is working properly. All fittings and vents will be checked, as well as the pilot light and the valves. Also consider installing a carbon monoxide detector in the area for added safety.

Looking for a comfortable spot to relax in your home? Choose gas stoves for convenience and you can have that spot with the flick of a switch.

Fireplace Village has the largest selection of gas stoves in New England. You can view gas stoves from the top hearth manufacturers including, Hearthstone, Heat & Glo, Jotul, Napoleon and Vermont Castings, at any of our New Hampshire locations. Fireplace Village installs and services gas stoves.

Responsible Wood Burning is the Sustainable Choice

clean_burning_wood_stoves
Looking to shrink your carbon footprint? Heating your home with a new, energy efficient wood burning stove, fireplace or fireplace insert is an excellent choice. Not the dirty, messy process it once was, wood burning for heat is eco friendly and responsible.

Wood is considered a bio-mass fuel, which means that it is made up of organic material. Burning dry, seasoned hardwood is utilizing an environmentally stable fuel that is much more sustainable than oil or gas. It’s also very often less expensive than the alternatives, sometimes as much as 30%.

Wood is also considered a “carbon neutral fuel.” The carbon dioxide that is released during a fire is equal to or less than the amount that same tree absorbed during its growth. Incidentally, if a tree is left to rot it also releases that same amount of carbon, but has not served as a source of heat. This balance makes wood burning heating appliances the perfect choice for the home.

New technologies have made wood burning fireplaces, fireplace inserts and wood stoves more efficient than ever. The well designed venting systems and firebox construction allow the fuel to be burned more completely, resulting in less smoke. Always be sure to burn wood that is free of paints, hardware and preservatives.

Government regulations require that current models of wood burning and gas heating appliances meet a certain standard of emissions. EPA states that the unit must release no more than 7.5 grams of smoke emissions per hour. You can be assured that a new wood burning stove or fireplace will go beyond that minimum standard and deliver a clean, eco-friendly burn that produces steady, comfortable heat for your home. Proper maintenance and annual professional inspections will ensure that your unit is working well year round.

The firewood supply industry is very involved in the movement to go green. Reforestation is organized and well thought out. Timber is a sustainable product and won’t drain our natural resources like natural gas and oil heating do. Buying from a local supplier of firewood means that your purchase has not contributed to emissions expelled over long shipping routes.

As a responsible, reliable choice of heat, wood burning appliances are the right choice. The ambiance and style they bring into your home has always been the traditional attraction, but new designs have made them even better. Not only will your home boast a beautiful hearth, but the use of it will contribute to a sustainable environment. Both are beneficial to your home and family.
