The construction of a wood stove will influence the quality of heat your home receives. Materials must withstand the heat of constant flames and the range of temperatures that occur. Soapstone wood stoves take advantage of the substance and durability of this completely natural product that’s not only attractive, it is ideal for wood stove heating.
Soapstone was formed under intense pressure and heat beneath the earth’s surface. Because of this process, the material is extremely stable and has the strength to withstand flames. More importantly, like marble and granite it will trap the heat of fire and radiate it gently into the surrounding area. The composition of soapstone allows for the highest heat exposure, making it a better choice than other stone.
Thick stone slabs form the firebox of a soapstone wood stove on the sides, top and bottom. This is in place of the steel, firebricks or cast iron which is more often used. Durable and strong, soapstone fireboxes will last for years, providing a reliable construction for your heating unit.
Exterior walls don’t become as hot to the touch as other materials, providing a safer surface on your stove. Your hearth will still require protection, to keep young children and pets away from the heat. But you can rest in the knowledge that soapstone is less of a danger. It will radiate a steady, comfortable heat instead of the extremes of other materials.
The exterior of these wood stoves have an incredible natural beauty. With stone veining and a smooth, polished texture, soapstone will perfectly compliment your décor. As the stone is exposed to heat over time, the ingrained patterns and color will actually deepen, creating a timeless look.
Wood stoves constructed from soapstone are built for convenience. As the stones absorb the heat of the fire, they gently and slowly release that heat into the room. The warmth stays within the soapstone for hours at a time, maintaining an even, reliable heat source overnight or through a long evening. As a building material, the strength of stone is nearly unmatched and your soapstone wood stove is sure to last for generations.
Some popular wood stove models combine the strength of cast iron with the benefits of soapstone. Cast iron warms up and radiates heat quickly, while the stone delivers over an extended period. Combining the two gives your home the best of both worlds, all the while utilizing durable materials and construction.
As a smart investment, homeowners should consider the strength of soapstone wood stoves. For stable, cozy heat and a reliable construction, soapstone can’t be beat.

As the drive to go green picks up more speed than ever, the popularity of heating with pellets is growing. Pellet stoves work essentially the same as wood stoves, except with an alternative fuel source.
Pellets are made from wood and formed to be safe and burn efficiently. They are a truly renewable resource that will heat your home while caring for the planet.
The stoves have a hopper that holds the pellets (usually over 40 lbs of fuel, good for up to 40 hours of operation) and feeds them into the burn pot. The latest models have an automatic system that empties the ashes from the burn pot at a set time.
Automatic, efficient and a powerful heating unit, pellet stoves and pellet stove inserts are an excellent choice for your home.

Many older homes have stately and traditional open wood burning fireplaces. They lend a dignity to your living space and offer plenty of warmth and comfort to your family. They also tend to be a lot of work and their inefficiencies make them expensive and harmful to the environment. But there is a solution. Install a gas fireplace insert and enjoy all of the advantages without the fuss and cost.
Gas fireplace inserts fit directly into existing fireplaces. They take advantage of the old chimney system and will echo the beauty of a wood fire without the hassle. A flick of a switch (or a push of a button) will create the cozy atmosphere you want.
Natural gas fireplaces are extremely efficient and the latest gas fireplace inserts utilize the same technology, while working with your existing set up.
Some fireplace inserts will sit out from your existing firebox opening. The new, insulated firebox will rest on the hearth and extend into the old fireplace. Others are mounted to be flush with the original fireplace. Constructed of steel or cast iron, an insert will be installed to create a unified look no matter what the style.
A gleaming, self cleaning glass front gives you a clear and wide view of the log set inside. You will enjoy the scene and feel the warmth just as much as you did with the wood burning fireplace. The beauty of burning with gas is that you have no regular clean up, the fuel is always available and the fire can be on for as long or short a time as you want.
You will need an accessible gas line running to your existing fireplace. This is something that needs to be done by a professional, certified installer who will ensure all of the connections are safe and well done. The chimney will be modified if necessary, including a stainless steel chimney liner. Your gas fireplace insert will likely also include a thermostatic control and fan to distribute the heat well. All of these things will work to keep your fireplace at maximum efficiency.
Gas fireplace inserts come in all different shapes and sizes. The relevant measurements your dealer will need to find a model that fits are the width, height and depth of your existing fireplace. With these in hand, you can choose from the wide selection of designs and styles available. Anything from traditional to modern will work.

Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural, gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide.
In 2005, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 61,100 nonfire incidents in which carbon monoxide was found.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends:
Fuel-burning heating equipment (such as wood stoves, gas stoves and furnaces and fireplaces) and chimneys be inspected by a professional every year before cold weather sets in. When using a fireplace, open the flue for adequate ventilation. Never use your oven to heat your home.
The National Fire Protection Association has lots of useful carbon monoxide and fire safety information available on their website. The fire safety resources available for children are particularly interesting and informative.
Fireplace Village recommends that all homes have fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. We highly recommend the National Fire Protection Association resources.

If your home has been enjoying heat from a traditional wood burning fireplace, you may be ready for a change. Fortunately, there is a better way. Keep the classic look of your hearth and reduce heating bills dramatically with a fireplace insert. The technology will take care of inefficiencies and still deliver the atmosphere and look that you want.
Fireplace inserts are available using different fuel sources. Natural gas, pellet or wood burning fireplace inserts can be installed into existing open wood burning fireplaces. They are easy to operate and will allow you to use your fireplace as a reliable heat source, as opposed to an occasional indulgence.

With the open face of traditional fireplaces, the warm room air is actually sucked into the firebox and up the chimney. This reduces the efficiency to below 10%. Adding an insulated, closed face fireplace insert will greatly increase that efficiency, to more than 65% in most cases. With wood burning fireplace inserts, the emissions from an insert can be reduced to nearly zero.
The self cleaning glass front will allow you to enjoy the beauty of flames with the knowledge that your insert is saving you money. Venting and air flow is all taken care of with the new system. And adding features such as a thermostat and fans will help to control and circulate the warm air even more.
Fireplace inserts also come in gas fueled models. This can decrease your costs as well, depending on the price of either fuel. An insert will always increase the efficiency and heat output, so you will be using less fuel no matter what type. The convenience of gas fireplace inserts is attractive to some homeowners, while the atmosphere and appeal of wood fueled flames is a must for others.
Reduce heating bills by having your fireplace insert professionally installed and maintained. This includes choosing a model that fits the existing space and bringing the existing chimney up to current industry standards. That way the system will run at maximum efficiency.
Fireplace inserts come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and designs. The firebox is made from steel or cast iron to provide durability and strength. Glass doors at the face are used for insulation as well as viewing pleasure.

Be sure that the fireplace insert you choose is EPA-certified and meets the emission standards. Contact a reputable dealer for the best selection and have the insert professionally installed. Chose from ornate designs that sit out from the existing fireplace or flush mounted inserts.
Reduce your heating costs and keep the comfortable, traditional look of your hearth with fireplace inserts. Then you enjoy a cozy, efficient fire any time you like.

You might be one of the millions of American homeowners who enjoy the classical beauty of wood burning stoves in their living space. You are in good company as there are approximately 10 million wood stoves being used in homes across the country. The alarming thing is that 7 to 8 million of those are older, inefficient and conventional stoves that pollute.
Reducing that number is an essential step in our national movement to go green. New technologies are allowing wood stove manufacturers to build heating units that produce very little smoke and emissions well below the approved EPA standards. Upgrading old wood burning stoves will reduce the collective carbon footprint of wood stoves enormously.
And the surprising thing is that the upgrade will pay for itself.
The latest wood stoves produce a more complete burn by the way they are built. Non catalytic and catalytic systems are designed to optimize air flow for the best burn. This in turn produces the best heat, cutting back on the size and length of the fires necessary to maintain warmth. New stoves also incorporate fans right into the system, circulating the air better.
All of that will result in less firewood being used overall. Also, with the lower emissions you need less cleaning as the fires are not producing as much creosote, the main thing sweeps are cleaning out from your chimney. It is still important to have annual wood stove check ups, but the job won’t be as extensive.
Newly made wood stoves are also more attractive then previous models. Consider soapstone wood stoves, an incredibly beautiful design that is durable and produces heat over a longer period of time. Classic cast iron and steel construction can be enhanced using enamels to color the wood stoves blue, beige, green and red. Intricate designs, arches and smooth lines have all been added by designers who are pushing to take the wood stove beyond the latest trend.
It’s also easier to use a newer wood burning stove. Air washed glass across the front makes it simple to enjoy a fireside view. Ash collection systems and wide doors for accessible loading are two of the many other helpful features included on new stoves.
Upgrading old wood burning stoves might be done to ensure a more attractive focal point or simpler use of the unit. Many homeowners can see the advantages and benefits of these reasons. Reducing the pollution of the conventional models being used today is an urgent reason to upgrade.
Cut back drastically on emissions, odors and the unpleasantness of smoke by installing a new wood stove today. Finding a model you love will be simple amongst the selection. Rest easy knowing it will pay for itself and also add beauty and charm to your living space.
Fireplace Village is the largest and oldest wood stove retailer and installer in New England. We carry all of the best wood stoves, including Hearthstone, Jotul, Napoleon and Vermont Castings. For the comfort of real flames and the wisdom of eco-friendly technology, pellet stoves are an excellent choice. Napoleon pellet stoves go above and beyond by offering designs and features that cover safety, efficiency, ease of use and convenience.
The NPS45 and NPI45 models are fully automated, allowing you to truly relax during the heating season. Pellets are fed as needed based on the temperature and fan speed you choose. Everything else is looked after. The large 55 lb. hopper holds up to two days of fuel and doesn’t leave you with partial bags lying around. You can even add an extension to increase that capacity to 80 lbs.
Napoleon pellet stoves are highly efficient and now offer a digital thermostatic remote control that will allow you to maintain the perfect temperature from the comfort of your couch.
Finally, a pellet stove that has thought of everything.
