Fireplaces are the home renovation of choice for many people across the continent. Adding the warmth and charm of a fireplace makes it a popular home improvement project. Then there’s the added benefit of having a back up heat source in case of a power outage. But how will you know whether a wood fireplace or a gas fireplace is the best option for you? Check out the differences between them and decide for yourself.
Wood Fireplaces
The sight, sound and smell of a wood burning fire are attractions in themselves. It can be an art form to build a solid wood fire and the atmosphere is comforting for the whole family. Create an unmatched ambiance with wood fireplaces in your living space.
Wood is also a powerful fuel. With a fan or blower installed, wood fireplaces pump out enough heat for nearly any sized home. Logs are readily available, reasonably priced and an environmentally responsible choice. Wood fireplaces are extremely reliable and an efficient form of heat is only as far away as your log rack.
Gas Fireplaces
Many times homeowners opt for gas fireplaces because of their convenience. The flames of a gas fireplace start with the flick of a switch and can even be lit by remote control. Have a fire for a short time or a long stretch – using a gas fireplace is simple and quick.
These units can also be installed in a wide variety of locations. With direct vent models, an exterior wall with sufficient clearance is all that’s needed for you to have a gas fireplace installed. There are even ventless models that can be placed in bedrooms, bathrooms and nearly any spot at all.
Less work is required for a gas model. There’s no hauling, chopping or piling and the annual maintenance can be a little less extensive, although it’s still entirely necessary. You may find that you miss the authentic look and feel of a wood fire, but the sheer convenience of gas is a beautiful thing.
The benefits of choosing wood fireplaces are:
• The natural beauty of wood fire with its distinct appearance and smell
• Powerful – with a fan or blower it can easily heat an entire home
• Widely available, sustainable and economical fuel
The benefits of choosing gas fireplaces are:
• Convenient start which allows for short or long term use and even remote control
• Flexible locations for installation with direct vent and virtually unlimited locations with ventless models
• Less labor intensive because there is no need to handle fuel
No matter which you choose a fireplace is an attractive and enjoyable addition to your living space.

For the optimum safety and performance when using your wood burning fireplace, you will need to perform regular maintenance. Even when using the most efficient fireplaces available, there will be a level of soot and glaze buildup that needs to be cleared away.
The most important step is to contact a certified chimney sweep for annual maintenance to your chimney and fireplace. As a professional who has the proper equipment and training to keep your fireplace in tip top shape, a chimney sweep is essential.
Outside of this regular maintenance you can do some cleaning of your own. It’s important to recognize the different residues leftover from a wood fire. Creosote, which is highly flammable and must be removed from your chimney on a regular basis, is dark colored and crusty. This hard substance is a buildup or hardening of soot, another dark residue that’s softer and more easily removed.
A common recommendation is to have soot buildup removed from the chimney once it reaches a depth of 1/8”. After that depth the hardening or crust stage will begin and the danger increases.
Creosote glaze is another problem substance that builds up in your chimney and fireplace. This happens when new creosote layers are formed on top of other layers that are still moist or tarlike. The residue is shiny and hardens just like paint glaze.
There are products designed to break down the chemicals of the glaze, allowing it to be brushed or swept away easily. Use this powder or granular product when preparing the fire. A small amount applied will go into action as the flames heat up, causing a chemical reaction in the creosote glaze and basically burning it away. After this product has been used for a short time, the previously built up creosote can be simply brushed away leaving a safe and efficient chimney.
It’s a good idea to use the same thing as a preventative product, keeping the substances from becoming a problem. You’ll still need to invest in annual maintenance, but the work will be less and the day to day operation safer.
Burning dry wood and letting in the proper amount of air during the fire also helps to keep the creosote build up down. Practice good burning techniques to have the safest, most efficient fire and you can worry less about dangers like soot, creosote and glazing. When they do arise and at least once a year, have a professional inspect and clean your fireplace and chimney. Enjoy your hearth more with these simple steps.
