A gutter is used throughout the roof of a structure like a home, office or any other type of building. Its purpose is to help move excess water from your roof and siding down to the ground in a timely manner. Sometimes excess debris builds up in your gutter, preventing it from properly draining water of the roof. Gutter guard systems are put into place in order to prevent this build up of debris like sticks, leaves or dirt. These guards obviously have many benefits for your building’s roof, but unfortunately have some downsides as well.
The Benefits of Gutter Guard Systems
The most obvious benefit of having a gutter guard is most certainly preventing leaves and debris from clogging up your roof drainage system. Homes quickly turn into a leaf magnet after it rains because the rain drops act as an adhesive sticking tons of leaves to your roof. They will eventually get washed away by more rain, but some will end up clogging your gutter unless you’re protected with a gutter guard. This debris can cause an overflow of water and could damage the foundation of your home.
Another benefit to a gutter guard is it helps prevent water from backing up under your roof’s shingles. When gutters are blocked they can back up water into your home causing severe damage. The damage can cause interior wall damage and even the need for a brand new roof. This makes the purchase of a gutter guard that much more beneficial to your wallet, saving you future costs and expenses.
The Downsides of Gutter Guard Systems
As helpful as this tool is in preventing damage to your home it has its off-putting aspects as well. Firstly, the cost in the short term may seem undesirable. Many gutter systems cost anywhere from $200 to $3000 depending on the model and the size of the roof gutter systems the guards are utilized on. The upfront cost will be worth it when it comes to preventing future damage.
Another downside is the aesthetics of a gutter guard. Many gutter guards are fairly unsightly on the roof of your home, but it depends if you care about aesthetics or usability of your gutter more. However, it’s becoming easier to purchase gutter guards that are completely unsightly.
In an effort to save costs, many go for the cheaper gutter guards made of mesh. This least expensive option allows for small pieces of debris to bypass through into your gutter. Helpful in removing most debris, but overtime debris will still amass. This inconsistency forces home owners to decide between cost and performance. Choosing a gutter guard that performs better and costs more now, will help lower maintenance, reduce future problems and prevent the need for a chimney sweep.
