How to Clean Wood Stove or Fireplace Glass

Although many of the models available today have air washed glass doors you will find it necessary to clean wood stove or fireplace glass on a regular basis. Be sure that you follow the proper procedures and use only fireplace glass cleaner. Standard glass cleaner has not been formulated for use with the glass installed on wood stoves, gas stoves and fireplaces.

Fireplace Glass Cleaning in Four Easy Steps

1) Decide whether you will take the door off, remove the glass or simply leave it as is during the cleaning process.
2) Place a circle or spot of fireplace glass cleaner (about 2” in diameter) onto a clean cloth or paper towel.
3) Rub the glass in an oval pattern, being sure to reach all of the edges and corners.
4) Let dry and wipe off with a clean cloth. If you can still see carbon on the glass repeat the second and third step again until the area is completely clean.

Checking the Seal on Your Fireplace Door

The gasket seals on your fireplace door serve an important purpose. Without a proper seal your fireplace, wood stove or fireplace insert will not perform as well. While checking the gaskets and seals is a part of any good fireplace maintenance inspection, it’s also a wise idea to check the seals during the heating season.

Test the gasket seals on your fireplace door when it is not in operation. Place a piece of paper between the door and the unit. When the door is closed and latched the paper should be held firm. If you can pull it out then it is time to replace the gasket seals. Perform this quick test at every point around the door.

If your gasket seals need to be changed, check with your fireplace retailer to see if a replacement kit is available. Fireplace Village has a staff of qualified and experienced technicians, as well as a full line of fireplace and wood stove components for repairs. Be sure your hearth appliance is operating at its full potential by ensuring the routine maintenance is done – including checking the seal on your fireplace door.
